“Style is very different from fashion. Once you find something that works, keep it” says fashion designer, Tom Ford. Style is something that can be interpreted, shaped, changed, created and re-created. In a world where trends are relentlessly changing, here are 5 tips to help you stay one step ahead of the fashion pack.
1. Find ‘Your’ Style: it’s easy to imitate others, copy looks from magazines or your favourite celebrity. We take our inspiration from all forms of media and let’s face it, it’s fun to celebrity watch! But rather than let this determine your entire look, work out what you actually like for yourself. Take an aspect of a look and make it your own. Personal style is not about having expensive designer clothes or dressing in the latest looks, it’s about the way you put outfits together. No matter what your budget is, if you have a true sense of style, you can be fashionable.
2. Dress for your body shape: being dictated by what’s in fashion rather than what works for your shape is a real style no-no. Just because your celebrity crush wears mini-dresses and big shouldered jackets doesn’t mean you can. Recognise your assets and choose clothes which flatter these parts of your body. Not sure what your body shape is and how to dress for it? You can enlist the objective advice of a personal stylist to help you navigate the body shape do’s and don’ts. There are also plenty of informative guides you can read such as Trinny and Susannah’s ‘The Body Shape Bible’ and ‘The Rules’ or ‘Style Clinic’ by Paula Reed. My motto is “know the rules for your body shape and stick to them”.
3. Organise your wardrobe space: if a cluttered, untidy and over-stuffed wardrobe faces you every morning, chances are getting dressed is a real chore. Take the time to arrange your wardrobe into categories; this will help you remember where everything is. For example: jeans/pants (one per hanger)/skirts/shirts/long sleeve tops/short sleeve tops/sleeveless tops/dresses (progressing from casual to evening)/casual jackets/coats etc. Try to be diligent about putting things back where they belong. If you have the room, put your out-of-season pieces away. Having an organised wardrobe space will better enable you to see what you’ve got, make those daily choices easier and also make you a better shopper because you can see what you’ve got and importantly what’s missing.
4. Invest in wardrobe staples: much like building a house, it’s important to give your wardrobe a strong foundation. If you invest in carefully considered, classic pieces, you’ll have a great wardrobe base to build on. What are the classics to invest in? A great pair of jeans, a trans-seasonal coat, boots, mid-sized handbag and smart casual jacket, like a blazer. Of course, choosing that perfect pair of jeans will depend on your body shape, so again, know what suits you. Same goes for the jacket, coat and boots. The wonderful thing about fashion is that as quickly as trends come and go, so are the chain stores at keeping up with affordable interpretations of on-trend pieces. So if you start with the classics, you can build on them with cheaper, fashionable pieces that will instantly update your look without blowing the budget.
5. The colour connection: the simple rule is that white adds kilos, black reduces. Lime, orange, yellow and almost all shades of pink are instant weight gaining colours (even more so if shiny; think satin) whereas darker colours like chocolate brown, navy, black and charcoal and are slimming. Any colour worn head to toe has a slimming and lengthening effect. An easy way to work out whether a colour suits you is to hold it up to your face in natural light. Does the colour brighten or dull your complexion? Colours that highlight your natural features, especially your eyes, are the ones that work for you. Any colour that drains your face, makes your skin appear dull and pale, is not right for you. Colours are an easy way to add fun and flair to your wardrobe, just make sure you’re wearing the right ones for you.
